Whether it’s your first baby or your sixth, the weeks after birth bring significant physical, emotional, and practical adjustments. We believe postpartum care is just as important as pregnancy care, and deserves the same attention, planning, and support.
Our postpartum and newborn care is designed to provide reassurance, guidance, and continuity during a time that can feel both joyful and overwhelming. Postpartum care does not end at discharge or a single visit. Our goal is to provide a steady presence during the early weeks, helping families feel confident as they recover, adjust, and settle into life with their new baby.
After a birth center birth, families typically spend about four to six hours in the immediate postpartum recovery period. Once home, our care continues with close follow-up and ongoing access to the midwifery team. As always, a CNM is available on call for urgent concerns.
A typical postpartum follow-up schedule after birth center birth includes:

After a hospital birth, midwives remain your primary providers during your inpatient stay, rounding daily and overseeing postpartum care in collaboration with hospital nursing and lactation staff. Most families are able to be discharged home within 24 to 48 hours after birth.
Newborn discharge and inpatient care are managed by the hospital pediatric team. We coordinate with your pediatric provider to support continuity of care, while continuing to provide early newborn follow-up and guidance during the first weeks at home.
Following discharge, postpartum and newborn care continue with the midwifery team. The timing of follow-up visits is individualized and may vary depending on how you gave birth and any complications. In general, postpartum and newborn visits are scheduled at one to two weeks after birth, followed by a six-week postpartum visit.
The early days with a newborn are a time of rapid change and adjustment. Our approach to newborn care focuses on supporting healthy transition in the first weeks of life, while helping parents understand what is normal, what to expect, and when to reach out for support. For babies born through our practice, our midwives provide early newborn care and follow-up during the first two to three weeks of life. During this time, we monitor growth, feeding, and overall well-being, and offer guidance as families settle into life at home.
Some newborn screenings and assessments are completed at the place of birth. For babies born in the hospital, screenings such as hearing and congenital heart defect screening are typically completed before discharge. For birth center births, recommended newborn screenings are coordinated through our practice and are completed over the course of your follow up visits. As newborn care transitions to the pediatric provider of your choosing, we coordinate closely to ensure there are no gaps in care.

Feeding looks different for every family. Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, pumping, supplementing, or using a combination of approaches, our goal is to offer guidance and support as you find what works best for you and your baby.
Our CNMs and RNs are experienced in providing feeding support and assess feeding and the mom–baby dyad at each postpartum visit. When additional support is helpful, we work closely with trusted local lactation consultants who offer both in-person and virtual care.
