Birth Center

Our birth center is the heart of our practice, and has supported thousands of families through their pregnancies and births. The warm, inviting birth suites offer the comfort of a non-medical, home-like environment. Our birth suites are designed to support physiologic labor through comfort, mobility, and choice. Each suite offers access to a range of tools that many people find helpful during labor, including:

  • Hydrotherapy (birth tubs and shower)

  • Nitrous oxide

  • Birth balls and peanut balls

  • TENS unit

  • Rebozo

  • Aromatherapy

  • Bluetooth speakers for ambient music

  • and more!

Your Support Team

Birth is best supported when people feel safe, prepared, and well cared for. At the birth center, we welcome the presence of those you want by your side during labor and birth, including partners, family members, and other support people who feel meaningful to you.

We strongly encourage thoughtfully building your support team, which often includes a trained birth doula, and childbirth education focused on physiologic birth. Doulas provide continuous, non-medical support during labor, offering comfort measures, guidance, and reassurance that complement the clinical care provided by your midwife.

Having adequate support in place allows your midwives to focus on clinical care, while ensuring you feel continuously supported throughout labor. Many families find that preparation and labor support play a significant role in shaping a positive birth experience.

Safety and Preparedness

Supporting physiologic birth and being prepared for complications are not opposing ideas. They work together to create a safe environment where labor can unfold naturally, while ensuring that additional support is close by if circumstances change.

Our birth center is designed to support low-risk pregnancy and birth in a way that feels calm, attentive, and reassuring. Midwives remain close throughout labor, noticing subtle changes and responding skillfully as labor progresses. The birth center is equipped with emergency medications and equipment, and we practice within clear clinical guidelines that support best outcomes.

Our emergency transfer rate is <1%. With hospital privileges at nearby hospital THR Allen, and established relationships with both EMS and hospital staff, our midwives have pathways in place to ensure a seamless transition if complications arise.

Who Is a Good Fit for Birth Center Care

Our goal is not to fit people into a setting, but to support the right care, in the right place, at the right time. Birth center care is designed for people with low-risk pregnancies who value a midwifery-led approach and feel comfortable giving birth in an out-of-hospital setting. Many people who choose the birth center are seeking a non-medical environment, and care that emphasizes physiologic labor while remaining grounded in clinical judgment.

Birth center care also works best for those who are willing to actively prepare for birth. This often includes participating in childbirth education, building a strong support team, and considering additional labor support such as a doula. Intentional preparation helps create the conditions for a supported, empowered labor experience.

Because pregnancy and labor can change, candidacy for birth center birth is not guaranteed by a single point in time. We continually assess together throughout pregnancy and labor to ensure the birth center remains an appropriate and safe option.

What to Expect After Birth

After birth, families remain at the birth center for a period of rest, bonding, and recovery. During this time, midwives and nurses provide postpartum care, newborn assessments, feeding support, and guidance as you settle into the first hours with your baby. Most families are ready to return home around 4-6 hours after birth.

Once you are discharged, our care continues. We provide close follow-up in the early postpartum period, as mom and baby adjust in the days and weeks after birth. Our goal is for families to leave the birth center feeling supported, informed, and confident as they begin this next chapter.

Getting Started

If you’re considering birth center care at AMFW, the next step is learning more about whether this model is the right fit for you. We begin with a pregnancy intake process that helps us understand your health history, goals, and care needs, and allows you to get a clearer sense of how care works here.

We encourage you to explore the information on our site and reach out with questions. Our team is happy to help guide next steps and talk through timing, availability, and what to expect.
