Hospital Birth

For some pregnancies and births, a hospital setting offers the right level of support. At AMFW, we provide midwifery-led care in the hospital for those who prefer this setting, or whose medical needs are best supported there.

Hospital birth with midwives combines the expertise and individualized approach of midwifery care with access to additional medical resources when needed. Our focus remains the same as it is in every setting: individualizing labor support, using interventions judiciously, and providing clear guidance as decisions arise.

Whether hospital birth is chosen from the start, or becomes the best option as pregnancy evolves, we remain committed to providing exceptional care that helps families feel empowered, supported, and respected throughout the process.

What Midwifery-Led Hospital Birth Looks Like

Midwifery-led hospital birth includes clear communication and support for mobility, comfort measures, and informed choice. In the hospital setting, we place an emphasis on promoting physiologic birth, while remaining responsive to each labor's needs.

When additional support is needed, we collaborate closely with obstetricians, anesthesiology, nursing staff, and other specialists, while remaining your primary providers throughout, guiding care and decision-making.

If a cesarean birth becomes the safest option, our collaborating physician serves as primary surgeon, with your midwife assisting and remaining involved before, during, and after surgery. Care continues to be coordinated by the midwifery team, preserving continuity and clear communication even when plans change.

Pain Management & Flexibility

Pain management during labor is highly individual, and preferences can change as labor advances. We support a wide range of comfort options for unmedicated labor, as well as access to medication and epidural anesthesia when desired.

Some people planning a hospital birth hope to labor without medication, using mobility, position changes, and comfort measures such as hydrotherapy. At the same time, choosing pain medication does not mean losing midwifery care or autonomy. Decisions about pain management are approached with guidance based on both personal preferences and the full clinical picture. Our goal is to help you make pain management choices that reflect your goals and support your needs.

What to Expect After Birth

After birth, care continues in collaboration with hospital nursing staff and lactation consultants, who provide hands-on support throughout the day and night, while midwives check in regularly to assess healing, answer questions, and help guide next steps.

Most families are discharged within 24 to 48 hours, with clear plans in place for follow-up care back in the office. After discharge, postpartum visits allow space to check in on physical recovery, emotional well-being, and newborn adjustment.

Getting Started

If you’re considering hospital birth with midwives at AMFW, the first step is learning more about whether our model is the right fit for you. We begin with an intake process that helps us understand your health history, goals, and care needs, and gives you a clearer sense of how care works here.
